In a saw mill, wooden boards are unloaded and stacked after the sawing process. The unloading of the machine used to be done manually by four employees under great physical strain. The company then decided to automate this task and now uses an area gripping system from Schmalz. The vacuum area gripping system SBX is specially designed for handling unplaned wood and meets the requirements for this work step. With the area gripping system, natural materials with heavily warped or rough surfaces as well as materials with knot holes or cracks can be handled The area gripping systems are available in different lengths, which means the gripping system can be flexibly adapted to the size of the product layer. The sealing foam and the valve unit compensate for leakages and ensure a secure hold. An integrated check valve closes uncovered suction cells automatically thus preventing a drop in the vacuum level. Fast vacuum generation is achieved by means of a powerful vacuum generator. Ease of maintenance is a further advantage of the area gripping system SBX. The compact valve unit as well as the gripper's sealing foam can be replaced in no time at all. The low weight make use in an industrial robot possible. The area gripping systems are operated by an external vacuum generator.
